Rumors have circulated recently that the Tesla Model S would soon be receiving a refresh to bring its design in line with more modern Tesla products; however, Elon has put that rumor to rest by posting on Twitter:

“There is no “refreshed” Model X or Model S coming, only a series of minor ongoing changes. Most significant change in past few years was to use high efficiency Model 3 rear drive unit as S/X front drive unit. That went into production 3 months ago.”

The Tesla Model S was first introduced in 2012 and has been wearing the same design language since then, with a minor refresh for 2016 that removed the grille, replaced with a body color fascia. The Model X SUV was also shown in prototype form in 2012 with the production version coming in 2015. These two vehicles share the same platform and many of their parts.

There was speculation that when the refresh for these cars occurred, the widescreen infotainment system from the Model 3 would be added along with other new interior features and updated exterior styling. While it’s still possible that these updates will be part of the “minor ongoing changes” that Musk references, it seems as though these cars will continue without major changes for quite some time.

Tesla is currently readying the Model Y compact SUV and all-new Roadster for production and will be revealing their pickup later this year. We can surely expect more tweets from Musk in the mean time with details about other upcoming products.
