GMC Envoy Rendering

GM has been on a bit of a crossover craze recently, and for good reason. The all-new Chevy Trailblazer has nothing to do with the previous model and shrunk from a midsize SUV to a subcompact crossover that slots between the Trax and Equinox. Buick has even joined in the subcompact crossover action with their own version of the Trailblazer called the Encore GX. Before the Trailblazer and Encore GX were revealed, there was talk that a GMC version was in the works. We aren’t sure whether that is still the case, but we think it would be a good idea to fill out GMC’s lineup.

GMC was always the truck-and-SUV-oriented GM brand, but it has been passed by Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac which now offer a larger variety of SUVs than GMC. GMC’s SUV lineup consists of the compact Terrain, midsize Acadia, and full-size, truck-based Yukon and Yukon XL. They do not offer a subcompact crossover or a full-size crossover, so there is definitely room for expansion within their lineup.

For the GMC Envoy rendering above, we squared up the Trailblazer and added a mini-Yukon design theme, as that would appeal to GMC’s target audience and fall right in line with the brand’s design language. Unlike the Trailblazer and Encore GX, the Envoy should focus on being somewhat off-road capable, with an AT4 variant sitting at the top of the range to challenge the likes of the Jeep Compass Trailhawk and Subaru Crosstrek. The engine options would likely be the same as 3-cylinder-only Chevrolet and Buick siblings, though we must note that the more powerful 3-cylinder has been considered surprisingly peppy for such a small engine, though we have yet to try it out for ourselves.

What do you think? Should GMC add a subcompact crossover to their lineup that focuses on utility and capability?
