TFL recently reported that Ram may ditch their ancient six-speed Aisin transmission, which is paired with Cummins ISB diesels—engines which are the main reason many buyers stick with Ram. The 9-speed Allison is probably the most shocking option. GM, which used to own Allison (purchased in 1929, sold in 2007), still uses their transmissions; an Allison-built 10-speed is behind the 2020 L5P Duramax diesel.

Last year, Allison unveiled a new nine-speed which can be dropped into (among other vehicles) heavy-duty trucks. Allison’s new transmission is expected to be released in 2022, which is (around) when Ram will release their new class 2 and 3 heavy-duty lineup. Allison itself sells integrated hybrid-electric axles, but only for true heavy duty trucks (buses, big rigs, etc).

An 8-speed ZF transmission is also being considered. FCA has had much success with ZF so far; and ZF is expected to release hybrid transmissions around the same time Allison releases their new 9-speed transmission. ZF and FCA engineers have shown that they can work together well.

This information comes about a week later after FCA issued a recall for a transmission fluid leak in certain 2019-20 Ram Heavy Duty trucks equipped with a diesel.
